Waikiki Memories

In the 1950’s, when I was five years old, my parents moved to Waikiki, Hawaii. It was a beautiful and exciting place to be, full of flowers, palm trees, and the ocean! I started kindergarten the year we arrived, and remember Lei Day, a celebration of the Hawaiian culture. We strung leis of plumeria flowers and did dances. My family lived a block from the beach and we went swimming every day after school. My dad took my sisters and me out surfing on his big red balsawood longboard. It was a time of my life I’ve never forgotten. These patterns are those fond memories.
